Understanding Eczema Better





Eczema is a disease characterized by dry, inflamed and red skin. The affected area of the skin is manifested by frequent itchiness leading to the occurrences of tiny watery-crusted blisters. Eczema is normally found on the hands, face, back of the knees, inside the elbows or it can affect a majority of the body.

Eczema has no cure but numerous treatments are available to minimize skin inflammation and itchiness. Remember that the skin should be given special care after the treatment process because of higher risks of skin sensitivity.

- Emollients are moisturizers providing the skin with a shield, softening and hydrating the skin preventing dryness for a more comfortable skin feeling.

- Topical steroids also reduce skin inflammation however this cream is used with the doctor or nurse prescriptions.

- Oral steroids are used for severe eczema if topical steroids fails to treat the disease.

- Other eczema treatments are:

• Sunbeds or artificial treatments are advised for older children and adults.

• Antihistamine tablets are used for reducing itchiness.

• Wet wrapping is a kind of bandaging applied to the skin after moisturizing it preventing the sufferers from scratching the skin due to itchiness.

Eczema symptoms can be minimized to avoid advance attacks.

- Reduce house dust mite through regular vacuuming.

- Frequent washing of children’s toys killing dust mites.

- Maintaining children’s nail short.

- Following special skin care routine strictly.

- Have lukewarm baths with emollients.

- Wear clothes made of soft cotton material.

- Moisturize skin with prescribed emollients.

- Use glove when handling detergents, solvents or chemicals.

- Avoid exposure to allergens causing allergic reactions.
